The Rochford Workshop

The Rochford Workshop has been playing great music for over ten years.

The enthusiastic participants are people interested in learning more about the folk music and culture of Latin America. The group is coordinated by Mary-Jane Field, a bilingual musician. Mary-Jane has successfully studied and performed music gathered from the many cultures of South and Central American countries.

The Rochford Workshop is open to all having the desire to learn and enjoy the performance of Latin American music. The group currently includes local artists as well as people from Chile, Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The workshop is held weekly near Ashfield. The members come from various locations ranging from Bondi near the beach, to Fairfield and Blaxland in the Mountains, to play and sing the songs.

While expertise in the instruments and fluency in Spanish are not prerequisites for joining the group, the love of music is! Exciting Latin American instruments are played such as the pipes of pan, bombo drum, rain stick, goats toe nails, Bolivian charango, the guitar and, of course, the voice.

At the "Australia G’ Day"" on Australia Day 2000 Mary-Jane will lead the Rochford Music Workshop in entertaining our Blue Mountains community.

The Rochford Workshop spokesperson Mary Jane said, "The group hopes you enjoy their work as much as they enjoy playing and singing for you."
